How Much Steel is Required for a 1000 sq ft RCC Slab?

Estimating steel quantity for an RCC slab is one of the first numbers any home builder, contractor or architect needs. This guide explains the standard thumb rule, the Bar Bending Schedule (BBS) method, and provides a free calculator for any slab size — accurate enough for budgeting your TMT bar purchase.

The Thumb Rule for Slab Steel

For a standard residential RCC slab in India, the accepted thumb rule is 80 to 100 kg of TMT steel per cubic metre of concrete, or roughly 3 to 4 kg per square foot of slab area for a 125 mm (5") thick slab.

This rule assumes Fe 500 / Fe 500D TMT bars, standard span (under 4.5 m), and typical IS 456 reinforcement detailing for residential construction.

Steel for a 1000 sq ft Slab — The Quick Answer

For a typical 125 mm thick 1000 sq ft RCC slab, you will need approximately 3,000 to 4,000 kg (3 to 4 tonnes) of Fe 500 TMT bars.

Working: 1000 sq ft × 0.41 ft thickness ≈ 11.6 m³ of concrete × 85 kg/m³ ≈ 1,000 kg per layer × 2 (top + bottom mesh) plus distributors, chairs and lap length ≈ 3.0 to 3.5 tonnes for clear spans, or 3.5 to 4.0 tonnes if the slab carries beams or projections.

BBS Method — The Accurate Way

For procurement, contractors use a Bar Bending Schedule (BBS) built from the structural drawing. The steps are:

1. List every bar by diameter (typically 8 mm distributor, 10 mm and 12 mm main bars for residential slabs).

2. Calculate cutting length = clear length + 2× development length (Ld ≈ 47× dia for Fe 500 in M20).

3. Count bars per direction (spacing typically 150 mm c/c for residential slabs).

4. Multiply length × unit weight (8 mm = 0.395 kg/m, 10 mm = 0.617 kg/m, 12 mm = 0.888 kg/m).

5. Add 3 to 5% wastage for cuts and laps.

Diameter-Wise Breakdown for a 1000 sq ft Slab

A typical residential 1000 sq ft slab breakdown looks like this:

• 8 mm distributor bars — ~600 kg

• 10 mm main bars (bottom) — ~1,400 kg

• 10 mm or 12 mm main bars (top, edges) — ~900 kg

• Chair bars and binding wire — ~150 kg

Total ≈ 3.05 tonnes of Fe 500D TMT.

Buying Tips

Always specify Fe 500D (not just Fe 500) for residential construction — the ductile grade is mandatory in seismic zones and gives better elongation.

Buy from IS 1786 certified mills only — SAIL, JSW Neosteel, Jindal Panther, Tata Tiscon or Kamdhenu. Insist on the mill test certificate with heat number.

Order 5% extra to cover wastage, off-cuts and laps. It's almost always cheaper than a small top-up later.

FAQ

How many kg of steel per sq ft of slab?

Approximately 3 to 4 kg per sq ft for a standard 125 mm residential slab in Fe 500 TMT, including distributors, chairs and 3 to 5% wastage.

How many bundles of TMT in 1 tonne?

An 8 mm TMT bundle (10 bars × 12 m) weighs ~47 kg, so ~21 bundles per tonne. A 12 mm bundle weighs ~107 kg, so ~9 bundles per tonne.

Is Fe 500 or Fe 550 better for a house?

Fe 500D is the standard recommendation for residential construction in India. Fe 550D saves about 8 to 10% on steel quantity but requires tighter detailing and is more common in high-rise or commercial projects.
