1. Mill Test Certificate (MTC)
Every dispatch from a primary mill carries an MTC printed with the heat number, chemistry (C, S, P, Mn, Si), and mechanical test results (yield, UTS, elongation, bend).
Match the heat number on the certificate to the tag on the bundle. If the bundle has no tag or the heat number doesn't match — refuse the delivery.
2. Weight Tolerance Check
IS 1786 allows ±3% on TMT bar weight (±4.5% for individual bars under 10 mm). Cut a 1 metre sample and weigh on a calibrated scale:
• 8 mm should weigh 0.395 kg/m (range 0.383 to 0.407)
• 10 mm should weigh 0.617 kg/m (range 0.598 to 0.636)
• 12 mm should weigh 0.888 kg/m (range 0.861 to 0.915)
• 16 mm should weigh 1.580 kg/m (range 1.532 to 1.628)
Bars consistently at the lower end of tolerance are a red flag — you are paying for steel by weight, and under-weight bars mean you are buying air.
3. Surface Inspection
Acceptable: thin uniform brown rust film, sharp clean rib pattern, no surface seams.
Reject: flaky black mill scale that powders off, visible pitting, longitudinal cracks, inconsistent rib spacing, or any sign that bundle has been re-rolled.
4. Bend Test
Take a 12 mm sample, bend it 90° around a mandrel of 4× bar diameter, then straighten. The bar should not crack on the outer face. A bar that cracks fails IS 1786 ductility and must not go into a structural member.
5. Source Traceability
Only buy from authorised distributors of primary mills (SAIL, RINL, JSPL, JSW, Tata) with stockyard receipts and mill invoices. Avoid 'open market' or 'no-bill' offers, however cheap — there is no recourse if the material fails at the site.
FAQ
What weight should a 12 mm TMT bar be?
0.888 kg per metre under IS 1786, with ±3% tolerance. A 12 m bar should weigh ~10.66 kg.
How do I check if TMT is Fe 500 or Fe 550?
Both grades have identical visual appearance. The only reliable way is the Mill Test Certificate, which lists the actual yield strength and grade. Some mills also colour-code the bar ends (red, blue, green) but practice varies.
Is light surface rust on TMT a problem?
No — a thin uniform brown surface rust is normal and actually improves the bond with concrete. Reject only flaky black scale or visible pitting.
