Step 1 — Choose the Grade
For 99% of residential construction in India, the right grade is Fe 500D (the 'D' stands for Ductile). IS 1786:2008 specifies tighter sulphur and phosphorus limits and higher elongation than plain Fe 500 — essential for earthquake-resistant construction under IS 13920.
Fe 550D saves roughly 8 to 10% in steel weight but requires tighter detailing. It is more common in commercial high-rise and not usually necessary for a 2 to 4 floor home.
Avoid plain Fe 415 and Fe 500 (without the D) for any new house in 2026.
Step 2 — Choose the Mill
Only buy from IS 1786 certified primary mills. The leading Indian brands all meet or exceed the standard:
• SAIL (Steel Authority of India) — government-owned, the original benchmark
• JSW Neosteel — JSW Steel's TMT brand, widely available in Mumbai
• Tata Tiscon — Tata Steel, premium pricing, excellent surface finish
• Jindal Panther — JSPL, strong distribution in West India
• Kamdhenu — pan-India brand, competitive pricing
Avoid secondary mill TMT (re-rolled from billets sourced on the spot market) — quality is inconsistent and chemistry is rarely traceable.
Step 3 — Check Quality at Delivery
When the truck arrives at site, perform these checks before unloading:
1. Mill test certificate — verify heat number matches the bundle tags.
2. Surface rust — light film is acceptable; flaky scale or pitting is not.
3. Rib pattern — clear, uniform, deep ribs (CRS-grade TMT has slightly different geometry).
4. Bend test — a 90° bend on a 12 mm bar around a mandrel should not crack.
5. Weight test — weigh a 1 metre off-cut: 12 mm should weigh 0.888 ± 3% kg/m.
Step 4 — Calculate Quantity Before You Buy
Use our slab steel calculator to estimate quantity before placing the order. The thumb rule is 3 to 4 kg per sq ft for residential RCC. Order 5% extra to cover wastage and laps — top-ups on small quantities are always more expensive than the initial bulk order.
FAQ
Which TMT bar is best for home construction in India?
Fe 500D from any IS 1786 certified primary mill — SAIL, JSW Neosteel, Tata Tiscon, Jindal Panther or Kamdhenu. All meet the standard; pick on price and local availability.
Is Tata Tiscon better than JSW Neosteel?
Both meet IS 1786 Fe 500D with similar chemistry. Tata typically prices 3 to 5% higher with marginally better surface finish. For a normal home build the structural performance is identical.
What is CRS TMT?
Corrosion Resistant Steel — TMT with copper, chromium and phosphorus added for use in coastal areas or sub-soil structures. Useful in Mumbai's salty coastal belt but not necessary inland.
